Two University of Wisconsin Whitewater students team up to encourage youth entrepreneurship by launching Clest KiWi and podcasting their challenges, suggestions, and energy along the way.
Madison – Jordan Leahy and Nick Guenther official launched Clest KiWi on Monday July 27, 2009. Clest KiWi provides safety decals that parents can place on their teen’s window or bumper that say “How’s my driving” followed by a 1800 number and three number extension. “Our goals are to increase parent confidence, improve accountability among new teen drivers and develop personal responsibility among new drivers through youth entrepreneurship”, says Leahy.
The safety decals provide real time phone calls, emails and/or text messages when a following driver feels your son/daughter’s driving is inappropriate. The following driver may call the 1800 number, type in the three digit pin and will then be talking with the parent of the teen they are following in real time.
Leahy, a veteran of youth entrepreneurship sold his first business Clear Vision Cleaning in 2008 at the age of 21. His drive to dream big has not come easy as a youth entrepreneur, but one thing is clear in his mind; entrepreneurship creates pride, responsibility and understanding. “The underwriting for my window cleaning company vehicle insurance was extremely skewed since I was a twenty-one and male. If I got a speeding ticket, my insurance would go up, profit margins decrease and I would probably go out of business. The pride I had in my company influenced a fervent sense of personal responsibility; something I would not sacrifice by any means. My driving habits were swayed by that factor.”, says Leahy.
Jordan and Nick have been extremely involved in youth entrepreneurship for the state of Wisconsin. From co-founding Propel Wisconsin Innovation(www.propelwi.com), a nonprofit entrepreneurial organization for the state of Wisconsin, to being actively involved on the board of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) at UW-Whitewater. They know the only way to increase youth entrepreneurship is actively being it; by podcasting “how to videos”, blogging and being transparent about the development of Clest KiWi.
“We have a product that WILL save lives, develop responsibility & pride among teens, increase parent confidence and more importantly create innovative companies in our local communities by our future leaders.”
Clest Kiwi decals are ninety dollars annually and can be found at http://www.clestkiwi.com. Distribution opportunities are available for insurance companies and driving schools at info@clestkiwi.com.
